Returning to Learning

Most learning activities are visual, having your child’s eyes checked before they start the new year of academic learning is a good idea.

One in five children in Australia has an undetected vision problem, despite research from Optometry Australia revealing 79% of parents believe their children have great eyesight.

Ensuring your children have their vision checked before they go back to school gives them the best chance of success in academic, sporting and social development!

A new study from the UK has found that the number of children aged 13 to 16 who need glasses has nearly doubled in less than a decade.

Researchers say 35% of kids in the UK needed glasses in 2018, a jump from only 20% in 2012.
Children spend many, many hours in front of electronic screens which is resulting in eye strain, blurred vision, and short sightedness.

Also - Children’s eyes continue to grow until early adulthood, including changes in their vision, which is why regular eye checks are important.

Eye checks are a quick, painless and comprehensive method to make sure your child has clear vision.

Kids See for Free

Has your child lost their glasses, accidently broken them, had them chewed by the dog, left them behind ‘somewhere’, misplaced them, or a thousand other reasons they no longer have their glasses?

To ensure your children see well,  See Optometry have put together a special offer.

We provide a free second pair of glasses (from a special range) for children aged up to 11 when purchasing glasses. The second pair can be a “put your mind at rest” pair in case any one of the above scenarios happens. You know that your child will continue to see well!

Getting the best out of Year 12
Is your child (young adult) starting Year 12 this year?
This is the year that they’re more likely to suffer from eye strain from spending more time in front of a screen.

Learners Permit
If your child is going for their Drivers Learners Permit, they must produce an ‘eyesight certificate’ before they are granted their Permit to drive. Our optometrists are able to complete the certificate for you..

If you have any concerns about your child’s vision at any time, please speak with your optometrist as soon as possible.

What is Digital Eye Strain?

Eye strain affects vision and is caused by frequent, prolonged periods of staring at digital screens.

Digital eye strain symptoms vary; however, common symptoms are:

  • Dry eyes
  • Irritated eyes
  • Squinting
  • Blurred vision
  • Shoulder and neck stiffness
  • Headaches
  • Reduced attention span
  • Poor behaviour
  • Irritability
  • Frustration

Digital eye strain develops because of the repetitive motion of our eyes, combined with screen glare, blue light, contrast, and flickering, plus looking from papers on a desk and back to the screen – our eyes need to keep re-adjusting and this takes a lot of effort from our eye muscles.

Talk to us about what you child’s technology habits are (or even your own if you are having problems) and we can help protect against discomfort.

Our behavioural optometrist can help anyone with tests of the visual skills that are important to learning, work and life.

The behavioural optometrist tests the muscle control of the eyes to ensure that they are focusing well from board to book, to laptop, and that your eyes are tracking across the page or screen for fluent reading.

Vision problems can contribute to learning problems, if your child is struggling they may have a learning-related vision problem that can be diagnosed by our behavioural optometrist.
