Childrens Vision And Developmental Issues

It’s incredibly challenging to watch your child struggle, especially when you know they’re capable of so much more.

You may have spent months or even years looking for answers and help with their learning difficulties, and it can be frustrating when traditional solutions don’t seem to make any difference.

Uncovering the Hidden Visual Challenges

Many parents are surprised to learn that a child can have “perfect vision” yet still experience significant visual challenges that impact their learning and behaviour.

If your child is struggling with reading, concentration, coordination, or even exhibiting behaviour associated with neuro-developmental conditions like ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder, their eyes might hold a clue that a standard vision test doesn’t reveal.

Perhaps your child gets frequent headaches, loses their place while reading, finds close-up work exhausting, or struggles to maintain eye contact. These often are not just ” difficulties” they can be symptoms of visual processing issues affecting your child’s behaviour.

Specialist care that transforms lives

We believe every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential.

That’s why we have a specialised approach to children’s vision, especially those with learning difficulties or neurodevelopmental differences. We don’t just check for clear sight; we investigate how your child’s eyes and brain work together, identifying visual challenges that can hinder their progress.

Our unique approach involves:

  • Neuro-Optometric expertise
Our optometrist, Martin, has undergone specialist neuro-optometric training to understand and address the complex visual needs of children with developmental issues. This advanced knowledge allows him to uncover the cause of visual-related learning and behavioural struggles that others might miss.
  • Empathetic, unrushed assessments
Traditional appointments can be overwhelming for some children, so we offer hour-long appointments, or even multiple shorter sessions if your child needs them, in a calm, quiet, and neurodiverse-friendly environment.
Our treatment rooms are larger, and our entire practice is designed to minimise overstimulation, ensuring your child feels comfortable and secure. We are not in a busy shopping centre, there are no long queues, and our consistent, compassionate staff, including optometrist Martin who has been with the practice for 8 years, provides a reassuring presence.
  • Comprehensive Functional Visual Evaluations
We go beyond basic eye chart tests and conduct thorough assessments of your child’s:

    • Eye movements and tracking – looking at how well their eyes follow a line of text
    • Eye teaming – this test investigates how your child’s eyes work together when reading or doing close work
    • Visual processing investigates how their brain interprets visual information
    • Visual-spatial judgment looks at how they perceive depth and how they navigate their environment
These tests help us understand how visual challenges might be contributing to behaviour like toe-walking, poor balance, or difficulty focusing.
  • Personalised treatment plans
Based on our in-depth assessment, we develop a customised treatment plan that may include:A vision therapy program to strengthen neurological connections between the brain and eyes, enhancing visual skills, reducing anxiety, and improving socialisation and communication. We work closely with Occupational Therapists and NDIS providers to ensure integrated care.Unique prism lenses that can significantly improve balance, posture, concentration, and reduce sensory overload, helping your child feel more comfortable and secure in their world.
