Choosing the Right Coloured Glasses

Choosing eyewear is a big decision, made more difficult by the fact that whatever you choose, you will probably want to wear your new glasses for at least the next year or so, and for some people – everyday!

When faced with a multitude of choices of shapes, colours and styles, making your choice can take a long time. And, while choosing a neutral frame may seem like the best option, when you take the time to match your glasses with your features such as eyes, skin and hair, you can achieve a great look.

Our friendly staff can assist you to find something to suit your needs. Here’s a brief guide of what to look for to help you find glasses that make the most of your features.

What will match my eye colour?

Blue eyes

To make the most of your blue eyes, look for a frame in a contrast colour. A bright red, pink, green, navy blue or black can make your eyes pop. Avoid very dark colours if you have pale skin as it may wash you out. For a more understated look, choose a blue or grey shade which will complement your blue eyes.

Brown eyes

Dark brown eyes will look great teamed with bright-coloured frames such as red, blue, or green. Earthy tones will also match brown eyes well, such as tortoise-shell patterns, gold fleck frames, khaki green shades or deep burgundy frames. For a simple, classic look, black frames will suit, or a thin gold metal frame.

Green eyes

Highlight your green eyes with a dark contrast frame – black, orange, or purple will look great. Green eyes also match with earthy tones such as tortoise-shell, deep brown or burgundy. For a more unique look, you can pair with brighter colours such as a cobalt blue frame, or a red. Avoid grey frames, unless it’s a darker grey, as a light grey will wash you out, particularly if you have pale skin.

Hazel eyes

Hazel eyes are a little more complex to match and it’s highly dependent on what shade of hazel your eyes are. Some people with hazel eyes have more of a brown tinge, some have more green and others have more yellow or gold tones. Pick a frame that picks up on one of the colours in your eyes – tortoise shell, or glasses with a gold fleck can work well, as can various shades of green. Black also offers a classic solution which will frame your hazel eyes as a feature.

What will match my skin tone?

Skin tones can be categorised as either cool or warm. People with cool skin tones have a pink or blue undertones. People with warm skin tones have a yellow or bronze undertone. When choosing your frames, selecting a colour that matches your skin tone will generally suit you.

What will match my hair colour?

Brown Hair

Brown hair will look great with dark coloured frames – black, brown, burgundy, dark green. Warm hues are best, as even the darkest of greys is likely to wash you out. For people with dark brown hair, bright colours such as bright red, blue, or yellow, can offer a unique pop of colour and contrast. For lighter brown hair, stick to earthy tones.

Blonde Hair

Most colour frames can be worn if you have blonde hair – particularly if you have light blonde hair. Bright colours will look great, as will cool pastels – blues, greys and shades of white. If you are more of a golden blonde, check out a tortoise-shell style, or earthy colours. Black frames are also a good choice for blondes, regardless of whether you’re a warm blonde or a cool blonde.

Black Hair

Black hair will match almost any coloured frame – bright, dark, pastels, or simple black, white or grey. Patterned frames will also complement black hair. Avoid brown tones, unless it’s a tortoise-shell design, which will look good if there are some black accents within the frame.

Red Hair

Red, orange or green frames are a good match for red hair. You can choose bright colours or dark and earthy tones. Classic black, white or grey will also look great.

Grey Hair

Grey hair looks superb with bright colours – especially if your hair is a light grey or white. Cool colours and pastels will also contrast well. If you’d prefer more simple tones, you can pair your grey hair with black or metal frames.
