Meeting Kids Where They Are:
How We Test Vision for Non-Verbal and Neurodivergent Children

We believe that every child deserves to see the world clearly, connect with their family, and thrive in their learning environment.

But for parents of very young children, non-verbal children, or those with special needs or speech delays, the idea of going to get their eyes checked can feel incredibly overwhelming.

You are probably wondering - how can an optometrist test my child’s vision if they can’t read letters on a chart, or if they don't speak?”
The short answer is: They don’t need to say a single word.

Through technical training, advanced technology, and a patient-first approach, our practice is uniquely equipped to provide comprehensive, stress-free, eye assessments for children who are non-verbal, neurodivergent, or have developmental delays.

Here’s how we make it easy.

No Verbal Response Needed

Traditional eye exams rely on a lot of back-and-forth communication.

We can tailor our eye exam to help anyone with different requirements. Thanks to our behavioural optometry advanced training, we can conduct an eye assessment with no active verbal input from your child.

As long as we can capture their attention for just five seconds – and that can sometimes be by showing them Bluey, or engaging with them using a specific toy, or using hand signals and visual cues—we can gather the information we need. We can determine how clearly they can see, or how small an item is that they can see.

Instead of getting individuals to read letters on a chart, if your child is more comfortable pointing to props or shapes, we engage with them in that way.

Advanced Technology at a Comfortable Distance

For many neurodivergent children, or kids who are highly sensitive to unfamiliar people, having an optometrist up close can cause these individuals to feel uncomfortable or anxious.

To make our practice as welcoming as possible, we have invested in equipment that allows us to measure a child’s prescription from two meters away.

  • No bright lights
  • No sudden, loud noises
  • No invading their personal space

We can still gather the crucial data we need to make a diagnosis about their eye health and create prescriptions if needed for glasses from a distance, keeping your child feeling safe and relaxed.

Why Targeted Testing Matters for Neurodivergent Children

We often look closely at visual engagement—how a child's eyes engage with learning materials, iPads, computers, or faces. For infants, seeing faces clearly is how they develop early brain and social connections with their parents and siblings. For school-aged children, visual engagement directly impacts how they absorb information.

Children with autism often have a higher likelihood of problems with their vision because of the way that their brain has developed—they may have short-sightedness, long-sightedness, eye turns, or lazy eyes. If a developmental delay or cognitive change is compounded by an undetected vision issue, our aim is to work out how to help them best engage with the world around them by diagnosing and providing the right support (like glasses) to transform how they engage with their world and maybe prevent them from being left behind.

A Commitment to Dedicated Care

Our practice does more than conventional optometry techniques. Our optometrists are not only trained to work specifically with individuals with special needs, but Martin has been studying for a Graduate Certificate in Autism and Neurodivergence Studies. This unique combination of qualifications helps Martin better understand neurodivergent communication styles, adapt to learning disabilities, and directly support your child's developmental goals.

See Optometry has the dedicated time, space, and staff with skills to adapt to whatever your child needs. If an assessment means our optometrist needs to lie flat on their back on the floor to get on your child's level, that is exactly what we will do.
